Eri Silk
Eri Silk, locally sourced from the community farmers in Radhi, Tashigang, in the eastern part of Bhutan, is a testament to the country's deep-rooted values of compassion and sustainability. This homegrown silk is harvested in small quantities, with each fiber handspun using ancient Bhutanese techniques passed down through generations. What sets Eri Silk apart is its unique and compassionate approach to silk production. Unlike conventional silks, where the moths are often harmed in the process, Bhutanese farmers allow the moths to emerge and fly freely, preserving their life. This is why Eri Silk is often referred to as the "compassionate fiber."
For centuries, the community of Radhi has been harvesting this remarkable natural fiber with reverence and gratitude. With its rich texture and soft sheen, Eri Silk has not only sustained the livelihoods of these farmers but has also served as an integral part of their barter system. In exchange for this precious silk, the community trades for food grains and vegetables from neighboring villages, further strengthening the bonds of cooperation and tradition.
Eri Silk, woven into the fabric of Bhutanese culture, carries the essence of compassion, sustainability, and a deep connection to the land, making it a truly unique treasure of the Kingdom.
