DrukVana at the White-Bellied Heron International Conference 2026

DrukVana was honored to participate in the White-bellied Heron International Conference 2026, held on 25–26 March 2026 in Thimphu. Organized by the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature, the conference brought together researchers, conservationists, policymakers, and international experts to share knowledge and strengthen collaborative efforts for the protection of the critically endangered White-bellied Heron.

The conference focused on advancing conservation strategies for the White-bellied Heron, a species with fewer than 60 individuals remaining globally, and highlighted Bhutan’s critical role in protecting this rare bird and its fragile river ecosystems.

As part of the conference, DrukVana hosted a pop-up exhibition showcasing the Bio-Acoustic Collection, an innovative textile initiative that translates the songs of Bhutan’s birds into woven designs. The display featured the White-Bellied Heron series, alongside selected pieces from the collection, allowing participants to experience how sound, science, and traditional craftsmanship intersect.

The exhibition provided a creative and sensory dimension to the conference, complementing scientific discussions by presenting conservation through design and storytelling. Visitors engaged with the concept of translating bird calls into textile patterns using sonograms, deepening their understanding of biodiversity through a new medium.

The pop-up received positive engagement from conference participants, including conservation professionals and international delegates. Through this platform, DrukVana contributed to the broader conversation on biodiversity conservation and cultural preservation, demonstrating how creative industries can support environmental advocacy.

During the event, we were also proud to share that four pieces from the Bio-Acoustic Collection (White-Bellied Heron napkins) were successfully sold. This reflects a growing appreciation for products that carry both cultural meaning and conservation value.

Participating in the conference reaffirmed DrukVana’s commitment to using design as a tool for awareness, storytelling, and sustainability. The Bio-Acoustic Collection continues to evolve as a platform that connects people, nature, and culture, encouraging a deeper appreciation of Bhutan’s unique biodiversity.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the organizers for providing this meaningful platform and look forward to continued collaboration in promoting conservation through innovation and craft.
